Kindergarten - Kate Gobel

Kate Gobel has been teaching kindergarten at Cathedral for four years. Since graduating from Stonehill College in Boston, MA, she has enjoyed working with kindergarteners. Currently, Kate is furthering her love of teaching young children by pursuing a Master's degree with a concentration on early education from the University of Portland. While she is not teaching, Kate enjoys spending time with her family, walking and gardening.

Grade 1 – Stephanie McCoy

Stephanie McCoy has been teaching first grade at Cathedral School since 2004. Before coming here, she taught second grade at St. Catherine School in Seattle for four years. Stephanie has a degree in Elementary Education from Washington State University. While teaching in Seattle, Stephanie earned her Master’s in Education in the Literacy for Special Needs program at Seattle University. She loves spending time outdoors, with her family and friends and especially with her cute yellow lab Mitch.  

Grade 2 – Lori Schoepper

Lori Schoepper began working at Cathedral in August, 2007 as the new second grade teacher. She went to school at the University of Portland where she received her Master of Arts in Teaching in 2005. Over the past two years, she taught at Queen of Peace Catholic School in Salem as a second grade teacher. This summer she got married at St. Mary’s Cathedral and accepted a job at Cathedral School. She is thrilled to be here and looks forward to the school year. 

Grade 3 – Bobbi Bradley-Omo

Bobbi Bradley-Omo co-teacher of 3rd grade, has been a member of the Cathedral staff since 1992. Her subjects include reading, language, social studies, writing, religion and art. Bobbi received her BS Degree in Elementary Education from Arizona State University (where she was a member of the Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society) and her M.S. in Elementary Education from Kansas State University. Her graduate training included special emphasis on teaching the written word and supervising teachers in the classroom setting. Prior to Cathedral, Bobbi taught elementary school in Arizona.

Grade 3 – Julie Westerman

Julie Westerman is currently co-teaching third grade with Bobbi Bradley-Omo. Before coming to Cathedral, she taught in the West Linn-Wilsonville School District while working for her Masters Degree in Education at PSU. She is a native Oregonian and lives in SW Portland with her husband Scott. She has two sons. She enjoys traveling and stays active competing in triathlons and marathons every year. Through her volunteer work in schools, she is very happy to be pursuing a career she is passionate about. 

Grade 4 - Florian Angel

Florian Angel really enjoys her students, as she feels each of them brings a certain quality that enhances the learning experience in the classroom. Florian previously taught first, second, and fourth grades in Houston, Texas, and is working on her Masters in education. The opportunity to mentor student teachers is one of the many joys she finds in her position.
Florian comes from a journalism background, working in both print and broadcast media, and public relations. She also has extensive retail management experience.
On her free time, Florian enjoys exploring the outdoors, especially hiking near waterfalls and walking on the beach. She also loves traveling, reading, and shopping.

Grade 5 – Sr. Jackie Ryan, OSM

Sr. Jackie Ryan, a member of the Servants of Mary, has taught 5th grade at Cathedral School since 1986. She received her BA from Duchesne College in Omaha, Nebraska and her Masters of Arts degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Before coming to Portland, Sr. Jackie served as both a teacher and principal in Omaha diocesan schools, as well as vice-president of her religious community. She has been involved in elementary education since 1968.

Sr. Jackie's subjects include religion, spelling, science, English, creative writing, reading, social studies, math, and art. Her classroom provides students with an energetic and positive atmosphere for learning.

Catherine Baglien – Instructional Assistant

Catherine Baglien joined the Cathedral staff in Sept. 2009. She is presently the instructional assistant for fourth and fifth grades and Spanish. She also supervises both the lunchroom and the playground.  A former teacher, Catherine has substituted and volunteered in her own children's schools.  She has two daughters at St. Mary's Academy and a son and a daughter at the Southwest Charter School.

Valarie Marrs - Instructional Assistant

Valarie Marrs has been a part of the Cathedral community since 2003 as a parent and 2007 as an instructional aide in kindergarten. Besides being a great mom, Valarie has worked at a preschool helping students learn and grow. We are pleased she is part of the Cathedral staff.

JoAnn Borzy– Instructional Assistant

JoAnn Borzy return to Cathedral this fall after working here for many years and then taking a few years off.  She is presently the instructional assistant for first, second, and third grades.  She also supervises in the lunchroom and on the playground.  We are pleased to have her back at Cathedral.
